What is Retained Duty System?
The retained service are a group of men and women who do ordinary jobs, but are ready to go to an incident the moment their alerter is activated.

They may respond from home or, with their employers
permission and co-operation, from their place of work.
They are part of a dedicated team ready to face any
emergency.
They may not be fulltime but they are trained, motivated and capable people on the front line, saving lives, helping the community and making headlines. There is always a shortage of people to fill these positions. Nowadays there are fewer people who live and work in local towns and villages.
Responding
You may be or you may have just the person to fulfil our need. You need to live or work within 1 to 1.5 miles and arrive at the fire station within 5 minutes driving at normal road speed. Secondly you have to be flexible in your work because no-one can predict when you’ll be called out. Each firefighter carries an ‘alerter’ so that they can respond when required. There is a Salary based on availability and a payment for Extra hours such as Community fire safety, checking hydrants, station maintenance appliance checks and extra training and training courses. There is a particular requirement for people who are available during weekday working hours (9-5).
Employers Benefits
If you are unfortunate to have a fire on your premises they may be in a position to deal with the incident immediately. They could be part of your fire team or even as a fire warden. The annual cost of insurance losses topped 31 plus billion pounds in 2001 and is now running at record levels. They learn to take responsibility for highly technical and expensive Fire Service equipment. They work as part of a team to communicate fast and accurately, to take decisions under stress, to follow instructions and to be reliable. Are these the sort of qualities you are looking for? If you’re supporting a retained firefighter it is likely that your public spirited gesture will not go unnoticed in your community.
Having a firefighter on your staff makes good business sense, why, because throughout their career in the Brigade, they will acquire skills such as first aid at work, trauma care, leadership, LGV driver, an awareness of equal opportunities, harassment and bullying legislation, fire safety, manual handling, IT training, breathing apparatus procedures, working at heights, etc.
The Commitment working Retained Duty System
Flexible in providing cover which meats the requirements of the station This is not as restrictive as it appears as they can book off duty when required providing crewing levels permit and do not have to attend every incident.
They are required to attend an initial 2 week training course. This gives them the basis of firefighting, rescue techniques, and many other skills needed by the modern day firefighter. After completion of this course they are issued with an alerter and are classed as being ‘on the run’ and can respond to emergencies.
